  • Julia Bray, University of Oxford, Perspectives on the study and teaching of pre-modern Arabic literature in British and French universities
Trained in Arabic studies at Oxford in the 1970s, I subsequently taught classical Arabic literature at several British universities (Manchester, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Oxford) as well as in France from 2009 to 2012 (Paris 8, Paris 4), while maintaining close links with American colleagues.  What progress or setbacks in approaches and methods have occurred in English and French universities during this period? How have our student audiences evolved? How do we see the future of our discipline?

What can the humanities still do?

For an intellectual of the Third World, the man on both shores that I have always wanted to be, dare to ask the question is already answering it.
The old world does not stop dying; the new world struggles to be born. The health crisis is aggravating an economic and socio-cultural crisis, which is also global. We have seen it coming since the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya.
Since the ‘barking’ of NATO at the gates of Russia, to use an expression of Pope Francis, since the war in Ukraine, we know that a devastating atomic conflict is possible... What do thinkers think?
The alignment of so many journalists and writers with go-to-war is truly scandalous.
The times when we were fully engaged in what was called the dialogue of civilizations are over. We appealed to the positive in common history, literature and the social sciences.

Today the world is not as it used to be. Literature, which suffers from this situation, tries to find an increasingly narrower place in an increasingly civilized and less cultivated macrocosm. Editorial activity is growing but circulation is declining. The readership, damaged by mediocrat media, is becoming cretinized. Frequently asked and debated questions, such as why, for whom, what to write about? arise again with a crucial urgency. Literature in all its states must reconsider its presence in the world.
We had to face up to the fact that there is an invincible deterioration in human relations due to an evident drop in the IQ. But where have the promises of our intelligences of the past century gone? There are no more new ideas anywhere in the world, there are no more masters to think about...

We, the Arab literates of yesteryear and olden days, have followed with particular interest the evolution of Western thought; we have immersed ourselves in it... Then, disappointed, traumatized, we sank into a sterilizing quest for an un-actual identity.
However, from both sides of the Mediterranean, we have worked together on common cultural projects. An example comes to mind. Throughout the twentieth century, in European universities, between orientalists and romanists, the question  of the origins of Romanesque lyricism and the thesis of the influence of Arabic-Andalusian poetry had given rise to often fascinating, sometimes passionate, academic debates. Guided by our masters in the Sorbonne, we have traced this Arab influence in French poetry from the first to the last of the troubadours, from William IX to Louis Aragon, himself author of Zajals in the pure Andalusian tradition, to the young Hugo, also author of numerous Zajal stanzas. For the author of the Orientals and the Legend of the Centuries as for the author of the Madman of Elsa, entering Arabicness had to be through Spain.
We have taken up and completed the theme of interculturality. With, as a bonus, the courteous love that, carried from Medina to Córdoba, via Baghdad, came to inflame the southern passion. The whole of the twelfth century in Europe was literally overwhelmed. Then it was the transmission of Aristotle, averroism, algebra, medicine and other alchemy.
For a long time, we searched the comparative literature for the slightest trace of kinship between the cultures of the East and the West. We had attributed to this literature a "political" function that was not necessarily its own. Have we asked for more than it could actually provide?
However, the roads of thought are long and unsafe. Even when you think you have found a link, a trace, a landmark, the mediocrats, the arsouilles of broken ideologies, who rob you of your dreams of past and future communion, appear. Behind every loud voice that insults you, there are so many plumitives who only know how to misread the calligraphies on the pages of  history. Once confined to the depths of literature, these intellectual thugs began to infect the University, where "scholarly Islamophobia" began to emerge.

We are still sticking to the nostalgic wisdom of our late master Jacques Berque, who ends his closing lesson at the Collège de France with an ardent admonition: "I call for fields of significance that are not so brutally decentered, but coincide with our hereditary landscapes. I call on the Andalusians, who are constantly being redone, whose accumulated rubble and untiring hope we carry within us. »
Having worked for a long time on the Arab heritage, André Miquel, professor and honorary administrator of the Collège de France, reckons it. He once launched a luminous idea, the creation, in the Sorbonne, of a chair of comparative literature devoted to the interaction, the intersecting contributions, and the reciprocal influences that the Greco-Latin-Arab cultural  space has experienced... Do we still have springs for a new rise?
